A tethered unit has the cable permanently attached; an untethered unit has a socket you plug your own cable into. Both charge identically. The choice is about how you park, how tidy you want the wall to look, and what you might drive in five years.
We fit both and have no preference — but we will point out the things people regret afterwards.

How you park decides more than anything
If the charge port always ends up on the same side, a tethered cable of the right length is genuinely more convenient in winter. If you sometimes park nose-in and sometimes reverse, or share the drive with a second car, an untethered unit with a long portable cable is far less frustrating.
Appearance and exposure
On a front elevation facing the street, a coiled cable hanging on the wall is both visible and, occasionally, a theft target. Untethered units look neater and leave nothing outside.
Future vehicles
Connector standards for AC charging in the UK are settled around Type 2, so the futureproofing argument is weaker than it once was. It still matters if you expect to run different vehicles, or to sell the property with the charger in place.

Does a tethered cable charge faster?
No — charging speed is set by the unit, the supply and the car, not by whether the cable is attached.
What cable length should I choose?
Measure from the intended unit position to the car's port at its furthest normal parking position, then add slack.
Can an untethered unit be upgraded later?
You simply buy a different portable cable — no electrical work needed.
