Modern homes hold considerably more sensitive electronics than the boards protecting them were designed for. Surge protection at the consumer unit clamps transient overvoltages before they reach charge points, control boards, computers and smart devices.

Retrofitting an SPD is a short job on most modern boards, and it is now expected in many new installations. We check whether your board can take one and fit it correctly, with the required short lead lengths.

  • Type 2 SPD sized and fitted to the consumer unit
  • Correct short-lead installation for effective clamping
  • Compatibility with your existing board confirmed first
  • Certificate updated to record the addition

What an SPD actually protects against

Most damage comes not from direct lightning strikes but from transient overvoltages on the supply network and from switching events. An SPD diverts those to earth before they reach your equipment.

Board compatibility

SPDs need a spare way and a short connection to the busbar and earth. Some older boards have neither, in which case fitting one properly means addressing the board first. We will tell you that rather than bodging a long lead.

Where it matters most

Properties with EV chargers, heat pumps, solar inverters or extensive home networking have the most to lose. Rural supplies and overhead lines see more transient activity than urban underground networks.

Common questions

Is an SPD a legal requirement?

It is required in many new installations following a risk assessment, and recommended in most others. We assess and advise.

How long does fitting one take?

Typically under an hour on a compatible modern board.

Will it protect against a direct lightning strike?

No device fully protects against a direct strike, but an SPD handles the far more common transient overvoltages.
