Electrical fault finding and tripping diagnosis

Systematic electrical fault finding across South Wales. We locate the actual cause of RCD trips and blowing circuits, then quote a fixed price to fix it.

A tripping RCD is a symptom, not a fault. It might be a failing appliance, water in an outdoor socket, a nail through a cable from a shelf fitted last year, or accumulated small leakage across several circuits that finally crossed the threshold.

We diagnose by isolation and measurement rather than by guessing and replacing parts. That usually means we find the actual cause on the first visit and quote the repair as a separate fixed price so you can decide.

  • Circuit-by-circuit isolation to identify the offending run
  • Insulation resistance and leakage measurement, not guesswork
  • Immediate make-safe if anything dangerous is found
  • Fixed-price repair quote before any remedial work begins

Nuisance trips versus real faults

Older split-load boards put many circuits behind one RCD, so the small standing leakage of several appliances adds up. On those boards a single extra appliance can be enough to tip it over. Replacing the affected ways with RCBOs both fixes the nuisance and isolates future faults to one circuit.

The usual culprits

Outdoor sockets and garden lighting after heavy rain, immersion heater elements, washing machines and dishwashers with failing heaters, and cables damaged by fixings. We isolate each in turn rather than swapping the RCD and hoping.

When to stop resetting

If a breaker trips immediately on reset, or you can smell burning or see scorching, leave it off and call. Repeatedly resetting into a fault is how a fault becomes a fire.

Common questions

How long does fault finding take?

Most domestic faults are located within a couple of hours. Intermittent faults occasionally need a second visit under load.

Do you charge for diagnosis separately?

Diagnosis is quoted as its own visit, then any repair is priced separately so you always know what you're agreeing to.

Can you fix it the same day?

Most common faults are repaired on the same visit — the van carries typical replacement devices and accessories.
