Old wiring types, and how to tell what you have
You can date a lot of a house's wiring from a few visible clues at the consumer unit, a ceiling rose and a socket back box. Knowing roughly what era you are dealing with tells you how urgent a rewire really is.
Rubber insulated cable, roughly pre 1960s
Vulcanised rubber insulation was standard until the 1950s. It is usually black or dark grey and, critically, it becomes brittle with age and heat. Bend a rubber insulated conductor after sixty years and the insulation cracks and falls off, leaving bare copper inside a wall or a ceiling void.
This is the one type where the answer is not nuanced. Rubber insulated wiring is well beyond its service life, cannot be reliably tested without disturbing it further, and should be replaced. If you find brittle black insulation at a light fitting, stop and get the installation inspected.
Lead sheathed and fabric braided cable
Lead sheathed cable, a grey metallic outer covering a rubber core, appears in properties wired in the 1920s and 1930s and survives in some South Wales terraces where circuits were never fully replaced. Fabric braided flex, often on old ceiling roses and immersion heaters, belongs to the same era.
Both indicate original wiring of considerable age. The lead sheath itself is durable, which is exactly the problem: it looks intact while the rubber inside has perished. Anything of this vintage is a rewire candidate, not a repair candidate.

Imperial PVC, roughly 1960s to early 1970s
PVC insulated twin and earth arrived in the 1960s and transformed reliability. Cable from that period is imperial sized and often has a much thinner earth conductor than modern cable, and the earlier examples have a distinctive slightly waxy feel. Colours are the old red and black rather than brown and blue.
Imperial PVC is not automatically dangerous, and plenty of it tests acceptably. The concerns are the undersized circuit protective conductor, the absence of earthing at lighting points in many installations, and the fact it has now been in service for over fifty years. It gets assessed on test results rather than on appearance.
Aluminium conductors and other oddities
Aluminium cable was used in some UK installations during copper shortages in the 1960s and 1970s. It expands and contracts differently to copper, which loosens terminations over time, and it is more prone to problems at connections. Where it is found, terminations need particular attention and replacement is usually recommended.
Other things worth spotting: a wooden backed fuse board, a lighting circuit with no earth at the switch, brown bakelite accessories, and rewireable fuses with the original fuse wire card still tucked behind the cover. Individually none of these is proof of danger. Together they tell you the installation has not been meaningfully updated in decades.

What to do about it
Colour alone does not condemn an installation. Red and black conductors are simply pre 2004 and are found in perfectly serviceable 1990s wiring. What matters is insulation condition, earthing, protection and test results, and the only way to establish those is an EICR.
The report will separate what is dangerous from what is merely old, and it gives you a priced, prioritised list rather than a vague sense of unease. In many houses the outcome is a partial rewire of the original circuits plus a board upgrade, which is significantly less expensive and less disruptive than assuming the whole house needs doing.
Common questions
Is red and black wiring unsafe?
No. Red and black simply means pre 2004 colours. Plenty of it is in good condition. Condition and test results decide, not colour.
How do I know if I have rubber wiring?
Look at a ceiling rose or the back of a socket. Black or dark grey insulation that looks dry and cracks when moved is rubber, and it needs replacing.
Does old wiring affect house insurance?
Insurers can ask about the age and condition of the installation, and some ask for a recent EICR on older properties. A current satisfactory report is the simplest answer.
Can old wiring just be tested rather than replaced?
Imperial PVC often can. Rubber and lead sheathed cable generally cannot be tested meaningfully without disturbing insulation that is already failing.
What should I do first?
Get an EICR. It separates genuinely dangerous findings from things that are simply old and gives you a prioritised plan.
