Fuse board or consumer unit? What you have and what it means
People use fuse box, fuse board and consumer unit interchangeably, and mostly that is fine. The distinction that matters is not the name on it: it is what type of protective devices are inside, and whether there is RCD protection.
The words themselves
Consumer unit is the correct current term for the enclosure that receives your supply and distributes it to the final circuits. Fuse box and fuse board are older, everyday names for the same thing, usually applied to units containing rewireable or cartridge fuses rather than circuit breakers.
So the difference is generational rather than technical. A modern consumer unit does the same job as a 1965 fuse box: it splits the supply into circuits and protects each one. What has changed radically is how it protects them and what it protects them against.
What is actually inside yours
Open the cover and look. Rectangular ceramic or plastic carriers you physically pull out are rewireable fuses, which means the unit is likely to be several decades old. Small switches with levers that flick down are miniature circuit breakers, or MCBs. A wider device with a test button is a residual current device, or RCD. A device that combines both, one per circuit, is an RCBO.
Also look at the enclosure. A wooden backboard or a plastic case with no metal is a strong hint of age, because current standards expect a non combustible enclosure in domestic premises. None of this means the installation is unsafe today, but it does tell you how much protection you have.

Why RCD protection is the real dividing line
A fuse or MCB protects the cable from too much current. It does not protect a person. An RCD does something different: it detects a small imbalance between live and neutral, which is what happens when current leaks to earth through a person or through damp masonry, and disconnects in milliseconds.
That is the genuine safety gap between an old board and a new one. A rewireable fuse board can be functioning exactly as designed and still offer nothing to somebody who drills through a cable or cuts through a mower lead. Modern requirements expect RCD protection for socket circuits, cables buried in walls and circuits in bathrooms.
Split load boards versus RCBOs
A split load board has one or two RCDs, each covering several circuits. It provides the protection, but it has an irritating side effect: a fault on the fridge takes out every circuit on that RCD, so you lose half the house and the freezer defrosts while you are away.
An RCBO board gives each circuit its own combined protection. A fault on the outside light takes out the outside light and nothing else. It costs a bit more and it is the sensible choice for most houses, particularly where there are freezers, home offices, medical equipment or tenants.

Does age alone mean you need a new one?
No. Age is not a fault. What matters is whether the protection suits the circuits present, whether the installation passes testing, and whether the earthing and bonding are adequate. An EICR answers all three, and it is the correct thing to buy before a board change rather than after.
That said, if you have rewireable fuses and no RCD anywhere, you are relying on protection designed before modern appliance use existed. Add an EV charger, a shower upgrade or a kitchen refit to that and an upgrade stops being optional, because new work has to be protected to current standards.
Common questions
Is a fuse box dangerous?
Not automatically. An old board functioning correctly is not a fault in itself, but a board with no RCD offers no shock protection, which is the main reason people upgrade.
How do I tell if I have RCD protection?
Look for a device with a test button, usually marked as such. If nothing in the board has a test button, you almost certainly have none.
Should I choose RCBOs or a split load board?
RCBOs for most homes. The extra cost buys fault isolation, so one problem circuit does not take out the fridge, the router and the alarm.
Will a new board stop my lights tripping?
Only if the cause was the board. Often a new board reveals an existing circuit fault the old one ignored, which then needs fixing on its own merits.
Do I need a new board before an EV charger?
Sometimes. It depends on spare capacity, existing protection and the earthing arrangement. That is assessed at survey rather than guessed at.
