Signs your house needs rewiring
Full rewires are disruptive and expensive, so it is worth knowing which warning signs genuinely point to one and which have cheaper explanations.
Signs that genuinely matter
Rubber, lead or fabric-sheathed cable is the strongest single indicator. If you can see cloth-covered flex at a light fitting or rubbery cable at the board, the installation is likely to be decades past its service life.
The second is low insulation resistance across several circuits on test. That is not a matter of opinion, it is a measured value, and it is the number that separates a rewire from a repair.

Signs that usually do not mean a rewire
One socket that has stopped working, a single tripping circuit or a flickering light are almost always local faults. Fault finding will identify the cause in an hour or two and the fix is usually small.
An old-looking consumer unit is also not proof of old wiring. Boards get changed far more often than cables do, which is why testing matters more than appearances.
Full rewire or partial
A partial rewire is a legitimate approach where testing shows one part of the installation is sound and another is not, for example a rear extension wired in the last fifteen years attached to an original 1950s house.
The important thing is that the decision follows the test results. A partial rewire chosen to hit a budget rather than to match the condition of the circuits leaves the worst wiring in place.
What to expect during the work
Rewires are messy. Floorboards come up, walls get chased, and the property is disrupted for days rather than hours. Empty properties and voids between tenancies are by far the best time to do one.
A finished rewire should hand over with an installation certificate, test results for every circuit and a labelled circuit chart. If those three things are not offered, ask why before the work starts.
