Outdoor lighting and garden electrics, done properly
Garden electrics fail for boring reasons: water, poor cable choice and a spade. Almost every outdoor fault we attend comes back to one of those three, and all three are avoidable at installation.
Getting power outside safely
Every outdoor circuit needs RCD protection, without exception. The environment is wet, cables get damaged, and the shock risk outdoors is considerably higher than indoors. Where the board already provides that protection per circuit, the job is simpler. Where it does not, that is often the first piece of work.
Outdoor socket outlets need a weatherproof enclosure with an appropriate IP rating and should be sited where a plugged in lead is not trailing across a path. Height matters too: low enough to be useful, high enough to stay clear of standing water and lawn mowers.

Burying cable to a shed, garage or garden office
The correct cable for a buried run is steel wire armoured, laid at a sufficient depth with marker tape above it, terminated properly at both ends with the armour used as it should be. Ordinary flex or twin and earth in a bit of hose is the classic bodge, and it is the one that fails when somebody plants a tree.
Depth and route matter. Run cable along a boundary or beside a path rather than diagonally across a lawn where nobody will remember it is there, keep it clear of drainage runs, and record where it goes. A photograph of the open trench before backfilling is the cheapest documentation you will ever produce.
Lighting a garden so it looks like something
The mistake is one bright floodlight over the back door, which flattens the garden into a car park and blinds anybody standing under it. Better results come from layering: low level path lighting for safety, uplighting on a tree or wall for depth, and something warm and low near the seating area for atmosphere.
Use warm colour temperatures, keep the brightness modest and aim fittings away from windows and neighbours. Control matters as much as fittings: dusk to dawn on the security layer, a switch or app control on the decorative layer, and PIR only where a sudden light is genuinely useful.

Sheds, garden offices and hot tubs
A shed or garden office with sockets and lighting is a sub installation in its own right. It needs a correctly sized supply, its own small distribution board with suitable protection, proper earthing and a full test and certificate. Working from a garden office all week is a different load profile from charging a strimmer occasionally, and the design should reflect it.
Hot tubs deserve particular care. They draw sustained current, they are permanently wet, and they need a dedicated correctly protected supply with accessible isolation. A hot tub on an extension lead through a window is a genuine hazard and the single most common dangerous garden installation we are asked to make safe.
Ponds, pumps and water features
Anything involving standing water is treated as a special location, and for good reason. Pond pumps, fountains and pool equipment need the correct enclosure ratings, RCD protection, and cable routes that keep connections out of the water rather than in a plastic box sitting in a puddle beside it.
The practical rule outdoors is that every connection should live somewhere it can drain and dry. Enclosures should be mounted with glands facing downwards, joints should be made in proper weatherproof boxes rather than by wrapping tape around a connector block, and any transformer for low voltage lighting needs a dry, ventilated home rather than being buried in a border under bark chippings.
Certification and maintenance
A new outdoor circuit is notifiable work in England and Wales. You should receive an Electrical Installation Certificate and the building regulations notification. Keep both with the property paperwork, along with any photographs of buried cable routes.
Maintenance is mostly inspection. Once a year, before winter, check enclosures are sealed, glands are tight, fittings are not full of water and nothing has been damaged by tools or growth. Ten minutes in October prevents most of the callouts we get in January.
Common questions
Can I run an extension lead to the shed permanently?
No. A permanent supply should be a properly installed and protected circuit in suitable cable. Extension leads outdoors are a temporary tool, not an installation.
What cable is used for a buried garden run?
