Powering a garden office properly
A garden office is not a shed with a laptop in it. Once someone is working out there five days a week with heating, screens and a kettle, the supply needs designing rather than borrowing from a nearby socket.
Work out the load first
List what will actually run: a heater or air conditioning unit, lighting, two or three screens and a computer, a kettle, a printer, network equipment, perhaps a small fridge. Heating dominates. A 2kW panel heater running through a February morning is most of the load, and a poorly insulated building will run it constantly.
That number determines the cable size and the protective device, and it is the reason spurring off the house ring circuit is usually the wrong answer. A garden office wants its own circuit from the consumer unit, sized for continuous use rather than occasional tool charging.

Getting the cable there
The correct approach is steel wire armoured cable, sized for the load and the length of the run, buried at an appropriate depth with marker tape above and terminated properly with glands at both ends. Voltage drop matters over a long garden, which is why the cable is often larger than the current alone would suggest.
Route it sensibly along a boundary or beside a path rather than diagonally across the lawn, keep it clear of drainage and future planting, and photograph the open trench before backfilling so the route is recorded. That photograph is worth its weight the first time someone puts a fork through the flowerbed.
Inside the building
A garden office should have its own small distribution board with suitable protection, so a fault out there can be isolated without walking back to the house in the rain. Sockets should be planned around the desk position and generously provided, with lighting on a separate way from sockets.
Earthing needs specific attention. Depending on the earthing arrangement at the property, an outbuilding may need particular provisions, and that is assessed on site rather than assumed. Data cabling is worth running in the same trench operation: a wired connection to a garden office is dramatically more reliable than hoping Wi Fi carries through two brick walls and twenty metres of wet air.

Heating, lighting and comfort
Insulation is an electrical decision as much as a building one, because it determines the heating load you have to design around and pay to run. A well insulated pod may need only a small heater and can be brought up to temperature on a timer before you walk down the garden. A poorly insulated one will need double the capacity and run all day.
For lighting, avoid a single central fitting. A general layer plus task light at the desk makes a small room work, and getting the colour temperature right matters when you are looking at it for eight hours. An outside light at the door and a socket on the exterior wall are both worth adding at the same time.
Rules, certification and cost drivers
A new circuit supplying an outbuilding is notifiable work in England and Wales, and outdoor work is explicitly within the notifiable scope in Wales. It must be tested and certified, and you should receive an Electrical Installation Certificate and the building regulations notification. Planning permission for the building itself is a separate question and depends on size and position.
Cost is driven by the length of the trench, the ground you are digging through, whether there is a hard surface to cross, the cable size and whether the consumer unit has a spare way with adequate protection. Digging the trench yourself to specification is the single biggest saving available, provided you agree the depth and route with the electrician first.
