Fuse board buzzing: normal hum or warning sign?

A faint hum from a consumer unit is not automatically a fault. A buzz that changes with load, crackles, or comes with any warmth or smell is a different matter entirely, and it is one of the few noises in a house worth acting on immediately.

What is usually normal

Some RCDs and RCBOs produce a very faint mains hum that you only hear standing next to the board in a silent hallway. A meter or a nearby transformer can also hum. If the sound is constant, quiet, does not change when appliances switch on, and there is no heat or smell, it is generally not a fault.

Older boards in a cupboard can also resonate slightly against a loose enclosure or door, which sounds worse than it is.

What is not normal

The concerning version is louder, uneven and often described as buzzing, crackling, frying or sizzling. It typically changes as load changes, getting worse when the shower, oven or immersion heater runs. That pattern points to a loose or arcing connection at a breaker terminal or a main switch, and arcing produces heat exactly where you least want it.

  • Buzz that rises and falls with appliance use
  • Crackling or sizzling rather than a steady hum
  • Any warmth in the board enclosure, a breaker or the tails
  • Any smell of hot plastic or that distinctive fishy odour
  • Discolouration or browning around a breaker
  • Buzzing together with lights flickering or breakers tripping

What to do

If any of the signs above are present, switch off at the main switch if it is safe to reach and get a qualified electrician out. Do not open the consumer unit cover. The terminals inside remain live even with individual breakers switched off, because the incoming tails are still energised, and there is no safe way for an untrained person to look inside.

Where the noise is a quiet steady hum with no heat, no smell and no other symptoms, it can wait for a normal appointment, and it is worth mentioning at your next EICR.

What we do about it

We isolate, inspect the terminations under torque, check for heat damage across the busbar and breakers, and test the affected circuits. Where the board itself is at fault or no longer provides adequate protection for the circuits it feeds, we quote a consumer unit upgrade in writing with an itemised price, rather than pushing a replacement as the automatic answer.

Common questions

Is a humming consumer unit dangerous?

A faint constant hum with no heat or smell is usually harmless. A buzz that varies with load, crackles, or comes with warmth or smell needs immediate attention.

Can I open the fuse board to look?

No. The incoming tails and main terminals stay live even when the breakers are off. Opening the cover is genuinely dangerous without training and test equipment.

Why does it get louder when the shower is on?

Because more current is passing through a connection that is not making properly. That is a classic sign of a loose or arcing terminal.

Does a buzzing board mean I need a new one?

Not necessarily. Sometimes it is a single termination or a failing device. We test first and quote in writing only for what is actually needed.

Can you come out in the evening?

Yes, we work 8am to 9pm seven days a week, and anything with heat or smell is treated as urgent.
