Burning smell from a socket: what to do right now
This is the one symptom on the site we will not soften. A burning or fishy smell at a socket means something has already overheated. Treat it as urgent, not as something to mention next time an electrician is passing.
Do this first
In order, and without stopping to investigate what caused it.
- Switch the socket off and unplug whatever is in it, if you can do so without touching anything hot or damaged
- Switch off the circuit at the consumer unit, or the main switch if you are unsure which breaker it is
- Do not use that socket again until it has been inspected
- If there is smoke, visible burning or heat you can feel through the wall, leave and call 999
- Call a qualified electrician the same day
What causes it
The fishy or acrid smell people describe is overheating plastic and, in some cases, the fire retardant additives in accessory casings breaking down. The heat comes from resistance, and resistance comes from a poor connection: a loose terminal, a worn socket that no longer grips a plug properly, or a connection that has been carrying more current than it was ever intended to.
High load appliances are the usual context. Heaters, kettles, tumble dryers, washing machines and multi-way adaptors stacked into one outlet all put sustained current through a joint that may have been slightly loose for years.
Water ingress and a damaged plug or flex are the other two we see regularly, and both produce the same warning smell.
Why the smell matters even after it stops
Once a terminal has overheated, the damage does not undo itself when it cools. The plastic has degraded, the metal has often discoloured, and the connection is usually worse than it was before, not better. A socket that smelled last week and seems fine now is still a socket that needs replacing and its circuit tested.
What a proper repair involves
We isolate and inspect the accessory and everything connected to it, replace what has been heat damaged rather than just the visible faceplate, and test the circuit for continuity, insulation resistance and correct protection before it is put back into service. Where the cause was overloading rather than a fault, we will say so and explain what needs changing so it does not happen again.

Common questions
Is a burning smell from a socket an emergency?
Yes. Isolate the circuit and get it inspected the same day. Overheating at a connection is the most common starting point for an electrical fire.
The smell has gone. Do I still need someone out?
Yes. Heat damage at a terminal does not repair itself, and the connection is usually in a worse state after cooling than before.
Could it just be the appliance rather than the socket?
It can be, and a damaged plug or flex is a common cause. Both the appliance and the socket need checking before that outlet is used again.
Can I just change the socket front myself?
No. The damage is normally at the terminals and in the cable behind, and the circuit needs testing after the repair. This is not a faceplate swap.
