Cardiff: bathroom lighting and ip zones done properly

Straightforward bathroom lighting and ip zones for Cardiff property, including the paperwork that goes with it. Booked across Cardiff and CF10–CF24 on the same terms as the rest of our area.

Talk through your lighting

This page covers bathroom lighting and ip zones for property in Cardiff and the CF10–CF24 postcodes around it.

Bathrooms are the one room where lighting choices are constrained by regulation as well as taste. The most useful thing you can tell us on the first call is what changed immediately before you noticed the problem. Which is why the price follows the test rather than the other way round.

Cardiff Council is the authority for Cardiff, so where the work is notifiable the registration goes through them. The regulations are specific about it, so there is little room for opinion.

There is no single right answer for bathroom lighting and ip zones — the correct one depends on the age of the installation and how it has been altered since. Which is why the schedule of results is worth reading, not filing.

We work to the current edition of BS 7671 and note where an older installation departs from it and why that matters. For Victorian and Edwardian terraces across Cathays and Roath that detail matters more than it does elsewhere.

Certification and paperwork are part of the job, not an optional extra at the end. Older property, altered property and previously let property all get the same testing discipline.

A pretty fitting bought online with no IP rating — the version of this we meet most often on Victorian and Edwardian terraces across Cathays and Roath around Cardiff.

Mirror lighting omitted, then added later as a surface-mounted. Confirming it takes minutes; guessing it costs a return visit.

In Cardiff Council housing of this age, fan isolation missing accounts for a good share of cases.

We fittings selected to the IP rating required before deciding what, if anything, needs replacing.

Where access allows we RCD protection for bathroom circuits.

Every visit includes this: supplementary bonding considered where required by the installation's arrangement.

We extractor fan with appropriate rating, overrun timer and correct, and you keep a copy of what was found.

Cardiff and its immediate neighbours are the intended audience for this page.

Mistakes we get called in to correct

Frequently — mirror lighting omitted, then added later as a surface-mounted afterthought.

The design brief

Within those constraints there is still plenty of scope. Layered light — a diffused ceiling source, a mirror light that puts light on your face rather than the top of your head, and low-level or accent light for the evening — makes a far better bathroom than a single central fitting ever will.

What we specify

  • Extractor fan with appropriate rating, overrun timer and correct isolation Nothing here is optional.
  • Frequently — fittings selected to the IP rating required by the zone they occupy
  • RCD protection for bathroom circuits We will confirm it in writing.

One thing worth repeating: bathroom lighting is best specified with the bathroom layout, since the zones depend on where the bath and shower end up.

Decisions worth making early

Where can a fitting actually go?

It depends on the zone. Inside the shower or above the bath the rating requirement is strictest; beyond the zones, ordinary fittings are permitted subject to the room's general conditions.

Mirror light or ceiling light for shaving and make-up?

Mirror-level light, always. A ceiling fitting behind you throws your own shadow onto your face, which is why hotel bathrooms light the mirror.

Installing in Cardiff

Many older Cardiff properties still run on rewireable BS 3036 fuse boxes that no longer meet 18th Edition requirements — worth knowing before committing to a lighting scheme here.

Local conditions here are worth planning around: Cardiff Bay properties get more wind-driven rain than the city centre, so outdoor work near the bay benefits from upgraded IP-rated enclosures.

If you are just outside Cardiff — Penarth, Caerphilly, Pontypridd — the same rates and response apply.

Lighting questions from Cardiff

What IP rating do I need above a shower?

It depends on the zone the fitting sits in — the enclosed shower area is the most demanding. We work it out against your actual layout rather than a generic answer.

Do you deal with the paperwork for the council?

Where notification is required, it is submitted to Cardiff Council as part of the job.

What if you find something unrelated?

It gets reported, not quietly fixed. You decide whether it is dealt with now or later.

Is this notifiable work?

It depends on the scope. Where it is, the notification goes through Cardiff Council and you receive the certificate that comes with it.

Do you cover Cardiff for lighting work?

Yes — Cardiff, Penarth, Caerphilly, Pontypridd and the surrounding area. Most of our Cardiff work sits minutes from M4 J32 in the north of Cardiff.

We would rather answer a question than sell you a visit you do not need. Ask first. If you are nearer Penarth, say so and we will fit it into the same run.
