5 Signs Your Fuse Board Needs Upgrading

Old fuse boxes with rewireable fuses are no longer compliant. Here are the warning signs your consumer unit is on borrowed time.

1. It has wire fuses, not breakers

If your board still uses ceramic rewireable fuses you almost certainly need an upgrade. Modern boards use MCBs and RCDs that trip safely the moment a fault is detected.

2. There's no RCD protection

RCDs (Residual Current Devices) protect you from electric shock. Boards installed before 2008 often don't have them — a serious safety gap.

3. It trips for no reason

Nuisance tripping points to deteriorating breakers, water ingress, or a circuit that's overloaded. We diagnose and fix at fixed price.

4. Scorch marks or smell of burning

Stop using the affected circuit and call us immediately. This is a fire risk and needs urgent attention.

5. You're adding an EV charger or extension

New high-load circuits often require an 18th Edition compliant board with SPD surge protection. We handle the upgrade as part of the install.
