Three phase power at home: when it is worth it

Almost every UK house has a single phase supply, and almost every UK house should keep it. Three phase solves a specific problem, and if you do not have that problem it is an expensive way to buy nothing.

What three phase actually is

The grid distributes electricity as three alternating supplies offset from each other. A domestic property normally takes one of them, which is single phase, giving 230V and typically a main fuse of 60A, 80A or 100A. That is somewhere between about 14kW and 23kW of available capacity, which is a lot more than most households ever use at once.

A three phase supply brings all three in, giving you three times the capacity and enabling 400V between phases. In a house it arrives as a larger service head, three meter tails and usually a three phase distribution board. Loads are then balanced across the phases so no single one is overloaded.

When a home genuinely needs it

There are real cases. A large property running a heat pump, multiple EV chargers, electric heating throughout and induction cooking can genuinely approach the ceiling of an 80A supply. So can a house with a workshop containing three phase machinery, a small holding with equipment, or a substantial property converted into flats with separate supplies.

The tell is not the number of appliances but simultaneous demand. Diversity does a lot of heavy lifting: the shower, the oven and the car charger rarely run flat out at the same moment, and a load calculation usually shows more headroom than the owner expected.

What is involved and what it costs

It is a distribution network operator job, not something an electrician can do alone. The operator quotes for the supply upgrade, which can involve a new service cable, excavation from the street, a new cut out and metering changes, and in some cases network reinforcement. Costs run from a few thousand pounds to considerably more where a trench crosses a highway.

On top of that sits the internal work: a three phase board, redistributing existing circuits across the phases, new tails and bonding, and full testing. Lead times are measured in months rather than weeks because the operator's programme drives the date, not yours.

The alternatives that usually work better

Before spending on three phase, three cheaper options are worth exhausting. First, a main fuse uprate: many older properties still have a 60A fuse where the cable and network can support 80A or 100A, and the operator can often change that for a fraction of the cost of three phase.

Second, load management. A modern EV charger with a CT clamp will throttle itself when the house draws heavily, and load managing devices can do the same across a heat pump and a charger. Third, sensible scheduling: charging overnight instead of at teatime removes most simultaneous demand problems without any electrical work at all.

The South Wales reality

In Merthyr Tydfil, Cardiff and Swansea, three phase in a domestic property is rare and generally found in converted commercial buildings, larger detached properties or premises that were once a shop or workshop. If you have inherited one, it is worth knowing, because it changes what is possible with EV charging and heat pumps considerably.

For everyone else, the sequence is a load assessment first, a main fuse check second, load management third, and three phase only if those genuinely do not solve it. We will tell you which of those you are in before anybody quotes for an excavation.

Common questions

How do I know if I have three phase?

Look at the incoming supply. Three separate fuses in the cut out and three sets of tails into the meter means three phase. One of each means single phase.

Do I need three phase for an EV charger?

Almost never. A 7kW single phase charger fills most cars overnight, and load management handles a tight supply far more cheaply than a supply upgrade.

What does a three phase upgrade cost?

It varies hugely with distance, excavation and network capacity, and it is quoted by the distribution network operator. Expect several thousand pounds and a lead time of months.

Can I get a bigger main fuse instead?

Often yes. Many older properties have a 60A fuse where 80A or 100A is achievable, and the operator can assess it. It is by far the cheapest first move.

Does three phase mean cheaper electricity?

No. Domestic tariffs are the same. Three phase buys capacity, not a lower unit rate.
